Assessing statistical significance of periodogram peaks

The least-squares (or Lomb-Scargle) periodogram is a powerful tool which is used routinely in many branches of astronomy to search for periodicities in observational data. The problem of assessing statistical significance of candidate periodicities for different periodograms is considered. Based on results in extreme value theory, improved analytic estimations of false alarm probabilities are given. They include an upper limit to the false alarm probability (or a lower limit to the significance). The Child is Mother of the Woman: Parenting and Self-Parenting in Emma and Middlemarch

In order to examine the significance of parent-child relationships vis á vis the growing autonomy of Emma Woodhouse and Dorothea Brooke, we must first look at them as daughters in relation to parents, real or surrogate, ineffectual or influential. Next, to what extent do these two women act as counsellors and parents for siblings and friends, and how does their attitude to that role change? Last, both these novels feature heroines whose husbands or future husbands are much older than they are, and who assume parental roles with them. How does each heroine relate to this father/lover figure? Is he the cause or the catalyst of her maturation? As I hope to show, the obstacles created by these various relationships ultimately enable our heroines to examine and accept their values and themselves. Each author explores the issue differently, however. Though Austen does not use the language and imagery of parenting, birth, and growth that Eliot does, she communicates her notion of parenting by concentrating on issues such as good judgment and compassion. In the end, they show that each heroine self-sufficiently creates and nurtures a self which is at least a partial realization of her great potential. In effect, she becomes maturely suited to parent as a consequence of becoming her own surrogate parent

The Roles of Architect and Contractor in Construction Management

For the architect and building contractor the most significant aspect of modern commercial construction may not be the design but rather the management, consisting of coordination and administration, of large-scale building projects. Despite the importance of construction management, especially in mammoth and complex projects such as New York\u27s World Trade Center, legislatures have been slow to respond to the needs and practices of the construction industry. Although the skills involved indicate that the role of construction manager is more appropriately assumed by a contractor, the laws of several states provide that only a licensed architect can take responsible charge of construction. Legislatures should recognize that the performance of construction management may include the assumption of some obligations traditionally assigned by law to the exclusive domain of the architect. Moreover, it would appear from a cursory view of actual practices that professionals other than architects are acting in the role of construction manager. If legislatures are concerned with the actual needs and practices of the architectural profession, and their enacting of licensing statutes indicates that such is the case, legislatures should clarify the various licensing statutes to take account of these adjustments in the architect\u27s role in construction

Abundances of Disk Planetary Nebulae in M31 and the Radial Oxygen Gradient

We have obtained spectra of 16 planetary nebulae in the disk of M31 and determined the abundances of He, N, O, Ne, S and Ar. Here we present the median abundances and compare them with previous M31 PN disk measurements and with PNe in the Milky Way. Phylogenetics of the Borage Family: Delimiting Boraginales and Assessing Closest Relatives

The placement of Boraginales, and relationships within the family have remained elusive in modern, broad phylogenetic studies. In order to assess the phylogeny of Boraginales, and specifically to test the sister lineage of the order, a data matrix of the chloroplast markers rbcL, ndhF, and trnL-trnF was assembled from GenBank and de novo sequences (representing 132 new GenBank accessions). Phylogenies inferred using Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian frameworks resulted in identical topologies. Tests for alternative topologies were used to assess whether any of the candidates for sister (Solanales, Gentianales, Lamiales, or Vahlia) to Boraginales could be ruled out with this dataset. Gentianales was eliminated as the possible closest relative to Boraginales. Additionally, Shimodaira-Hasegawa tests were used to test topological results within Boraginales: monophyly of Hydrophyllaceae cannot be rejected and paraphyly of Ehretiaceae with respect to the parasitic Lennoaceae is supported. Taxonomic implications are discussed within the context of these phylogenetic results

Having briefly outlined the history of the formal development of the Act, it is the purpose of this Article to discuss in narrative form the legislative process on certain key provisions which were the subject of much debate and disagreement.
